Hot days a year

A hot day here is the Met Office summer days index: a day whose maximum goes above 25  °C. Above, not reaches, because the published definition says exceeds, so a day landing exactly on the figure is not one. Part years are left out, so the current year does not appear.

tropical nights show no meaningful change across 1951 to 2025. A tropical night here is the Met Office tropical nights index: a night whose minimum stays above 20  °C. It is the figure that decides whether a bedroom cools down at all overnight.

Warmest days in this series

These come from a reanalysis grid roughly 11 km across, not from a thermometer in Belfast. A grid cell is an average over its whole area, so its peak reads lower than the highest reading a single weather station recorded the same day. The shape of the record is sound. Treat the individual figures as the area, not the hottest corner of it.

The data has been processed: readings were validated, stored, and summarised into the counts and averages shown here. The thresholds behind those counts are the Met Office ones, not this site's own. The series is ERA5-Land, one reanalysis model throughout, so nothing here spans a change of dataset partway along.
